Barton Farm, with its rich history, has stood the test of time. Recorded in the Domesday Book of 1068, it was once the site of the manor of Hittisleigh, an Anglo-Saxon administrative unit. The farmhouse at the heart of the farm is believed to be over 500 years old, a testament to the enduring nature of this remarkable property.

Among the farm’s historic buildings is The Oak Barn, an 18th-century granary and general barn. Built traditionally with cob—a mix of subsoil and straw—this barn has served various purposes over the centuries. In 2010 and 2011, the barn underwent a transformation, carefully converted into a wedding venue and holiday let. Local craftsmen used traditional construction methods, preserving the building’s charm while introducing modern comforts. Green oak trusses, sourced from the farm’s own woods, were used in the conversion, along with lime plasters and re-mixed cob to maintain the building’s authenticity. Even the heating system was thoughtfully designed, using sustainable woodchip. The Oak Barn opened its doors as a venue in May 2011, inviting couples to celebrate their special day in a place steeped in history and crafted with care.
